Integrated care boards (ICB’s) are NHS organisations responsible for planning health services for their local population. There is one ICB in each ICS (integrated Care System) area.
They manage the NHS budget and work with local providers of NHS services, such as hospital and GP practices, to agree a joint fiver year plan which says how the NHS will contribute to the ICP’s integrated care strategy, While every GP practice falls under the ICB, these boards also incorporate other healthcare professionals such as nurses
The spectrum of services commissioned by ICB’s includes planned hospital care, rehabilitative care, urgent and emergency care (including our-of-hours services), most community health services, as well as mental health and learning disability services.

When local partners – the NHS, councils, voluntary sector and others – work together, they can create better service based on local need. Integrated care systems, (ICS’s) have been set up to make this happen. Their aim is to improve health and care services- with a focus on prevention, better outcomes and reducing health inequalities.
